The development process of the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) has made significant progress. Despite numerous reports of delays, President Joko Widodo emphasized that the IKN's development aims to distribute development more evenly, encompassing the economy, population, and infrastructure.

According to the National Capital Law, the development of the IKN is planned in five stages from 2022 to 2045. The Indonesian Capital City Authority is responsible for preparing, developing, and relocating the National Capital City and implementing the Special Regional Government of the Indonesian Capital City. These are the details regarding the IKN and its preparations to welcome the 79th Indonesian Independence Day.

1. IKN Airport

The construction process of IKN Airport officially started in November 2023. The airport is located in Penajam District, Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, about 23 km from the center of IKN and 120 km from Balikpapan. With the construction of this airport, access to the IKN area will be more convenient, improving connectivity and facilitating mobility from various regions.

The Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, has inspected the progress of the IKN Airport development and stated that it is going well and is on schedule. The airport commenced operations in July 2024 and is expected to be fully operational by December 2024.

The development of IKN also involves collaboration with the private sector to develop air transportation. The design concept for this airport terminal will integrate elements of the local Kalimantan culture with a modern, environmentally friendly approach.

On August 12, President Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, inaugurated the flag-raising troops (Paskibraka) for the 79th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia in the Indonesian Capital City (IKN), East Kalimantan. Unlike in previous years, the ceremony to commemorate the 79th anniversary will be held at the IKN.

This year, there are 76 Paskibraka members, including male and female students representing all 38 provinces of Indonesia. In 2023, four tray bearers will be responsible for parading a duplicate of the heirloom flag from Jakarta to the Archipelago.

3. Delay in the planned visit of volunteers to the IKN

President Joko Widodo has postponed inviting hundreds of volunteers to visit the Indonesian Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan on August 11, 2024. This decision was made so that he could concentrate on preparing for the 79th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia ceremony and ensure it would not be disrupted.

The volunteers' visit was rescheduled after commemorating the 79th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, precisely on August 24 and 25, 2024. The plan is for 500 volunteers to visit the IKN with President Jokowi.

The first plenary cabinet meeting occurred at the IKN on August 12, 2024, with President Jokowi leading the meeting. In addition to the cabinet meeting, President Jokowi also attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the IKN project. Therefore, the IKN development plan is anticipated to contribute substantially to Indonesia's future progress.

In line with the Vision of Indonesia 2045, the development of the IKN aims to help Indonesia attain developed country status. The IKN will enhance national identity, refocus development to be more Indonesian-centric, and expedite economic transformation.

President Joko Widodo emphasized that the relocation of the capital city involves not just the physical relocation of government buildings but also a change in work culture and a new mindset supported by a well-prepared system and human resources.

The IKN's development is anticipated to create an inclusive, eco-friendly, sustainable, and comfortable city that focuses on human well-being.
